Seminar on October 9, 2025 "An Overview of the EU Data Act and Key Considerations for Japanese Companies".(held by Joho Kiko)
We will be holding a seminar hosted by Joho Kiko.
The EU Data Act (EUDA: European Union Data Act), which sets out rules on fair access to and use of data in the European Union (EU), entered into force in January 2024 and will apply from September 2025.
The EUDA applies globally to companies that supply certain products or services to the EU market, regardless of where they are established. In the event of a violation, companies may be subject to substantial administrative fines comparable to those under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), namely up to EUR 20 million or, in the case of an undertaking, up to 4% of the undertaking's group-wide annual worldwide turnover of the preceding financial year, whichever is higher.
In addition, a finding of infringement by a supervisory authority may trigger the risk of collective civil damages claims being brought by users of the relevant products or services. For these reasons, the EUDA is expected to have a significant impact on Japanese companies conducting business in Europe.
